ADD PEPOLE TO AFRO LIST : JOSH ETC>

As the first of our SXSW 3 Part special, A.F.R.O.  reached out to Ozomatli to find out how thing's are going since their affray with the cops at SXSW last year. Things seem to be just fine, and there are unconfirmed notions that Ozo may be considering a SXSW performance in March! To which we emphatically say : Nos vemos en Austin. Vamos a gozar!
Original Story:

Ozomatli bassist Wil Dog Abers, percussionist Jiro Yamaguchi, and band manager Amy Sue-Blackman Romero were confronted by Austin police during 2004’s South by Southwest music conference when the band took their music to the streets, unaware they were violating a city noise ordinance. The incident received international press coverage after the band and its fans were pepper-sprayed on Sixth Street, the epicenter of the festival.

All three spent time in Austin’s downtown jail, Romero and Abers charged with misdemeanors and Yamaguchi charged with a felony. The band and their manager have since been exonerated of the charges. Yamaguchi’s felony charge of a Class C Simple Assault was dismissed on July 8, 2004 and is no longer pending. Amy Blackman Romero’s Class B misdemeanor charge was dismissed on July 15, 2004 after her attorney entered a plea of no contest on her behalf. Will Abers pled no contest through his attorney and was placed on 6 months Class C deferred disposition for the original charge of Failure to Obey a Lawful Order.
Grammy Award winners Ozomatli have just released their first full-length studio album in three years, “Street Signs” released June 22nd via Concord Records.
Ozomatli statement: “We love Austin; this unfortunate incident doesn't change our feelings about the city or the people.”

AFRO: Will you be attending SXSW this year?

Cooley: Yes Dan.

What were some of the highlights from last year's SXSW?

Besides hearing you make out with your now ex-girlfriend in MY hotel room?  Har Mar Superstar, On The Speakers, Broken Social Scene, The
Walkmen, The Killers (I saw them at least 3 times!) Snow Patrol...

You are known to be the girl to find for all the "secret" shows, how do
you know so much?

Do you know who my father is?

For anyone who may be on the fence about attending the convention this year, why would you tell them to come out?

Mat Diablo from KRZQ will be there.  Just click your Chuck Taylor's 3 times, say "There's place like Reno" and look for a very complicated hair
cut- there you'll find him.  And because Dan puts out.

Coolest thing about Austin?

I can bring my gat into the bars.

Can I room with you again?

Hell no!

Can we call you to find out what's going
?

My call times don't coincide with SXSW this year.  And my number is unlisted.  But thanks for trying.

AFRO: So last year you were often seen hanging out with Jaime Cooley, who as we learned is the "girl to know" for SXSW, this year we expect you to further your own niche as the anglophile ring leader supreme, how do you react to this newfangled title?

Harren: I accept it with pride...I married a Britt for gods sake.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Looking forward to watching obscure U.K. bands at 3AM

So, is it fair to say that at 3AM you would also be (in the immortal words of Rob Thomas) lonely?

Yes ... or Lost or Both.

For anyone on the fence.. What would you say to convince them to come to SXSW?

SXSW is great because it's really easy to move from venue to venue and party to party...Austin alone should be the deciding factor. What a great city

What were some of the  highlights from last year?

Last year the highlight for me was when The Killers brought up a 20 piece gospel choir to sing All These Things That I've Done...oh yeah, and meeting Drea from the Sopranos was pretty bad-ass

Can I stay with you?

HELL NO
AFRO: Where were you if not cavorting with uber cool likes of Jaime and Jay?

Diablo: Whilst y'all are waiting in line for 4 hours to see the "buzz band" of  the year at Stubbs or Emos or something (which in reality is some mediocre band that already has a record deal and several moderately successful singles) for some hookers and open bar industry / Spin Magazine party, I and my band of merry men and women are checking out 6-8 vital bands a night that are destined to be the "buzz bands" of SXSW 2008. Or are you talking about the year that I checked out on mushrooms at the blur showcase and disappeared for 2 days? It's not my fault ... I had just watched "24 hour Party People" for the 46th time on the plane.... It was as close as I could get with the resources at hand.

When it comes right down to it does this mean that you are actually running in the cooler the cool circles?

Yes, Dan. We have a sort of "sub-society" of kids that is totally secret, and in reality, MUCH cooler than the crowd you refer to. and I would respectfully ask that this year, you and Cooley stop trying to tag along. you're not "in the crew" unless you are invited. Sorry.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Seeing the cyclical nature of music. Last year all the bands sounded like the MC5. This year they are all going to sound like The Ocean Blue and Adorable. I like that much better.

For anyone on the fence.. What would you say to convince them to come to SXSW.

Um..."you too can get drunk on tall boys of lone star and act like an asshole!" or.. "its better than Coachella..."

In all seriousness, if you are going to go, especially if it's your 1st time...don't worry about going to all the cool parties and being a scenester. Go see as many bands as you can, go to the good panels, learn as much as you can about the bands that you enjoy and savor the experience. It really is a music geek's dream come true. Get your amateur A&R on!

What were highlights from last year?

Denali, Against Me!, Modest Mouse and Need New Body, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, Joanna Newsome, The Futureheads, Jaime Cullum, taking a nap on the banks of the river next to that bat bridge, other stuff.

Can I stay with you?

You know very well what we do in the privacy of our hotel room. But if you insist....I'll pack an extra kimono and wall tapestry.
